Australia Trip Day01: Cairns

16 May 2009 (Sat)
Accommodation: First City Caravilla (Cairns)

Hello, Cairns.

Located at Northeastern part of Australia in Queensland, Cairns is surprisingly warm.

After going through the troublesome process of declaring our luggage and undergoing custom checks, we missed the golden moment of taking the Great Barrier Reef trip. So we have to resort to Plan B by taking the trip to the reef the day after and squeeze the other remaining plans.

Yi Feng, Qian Hong & Meng Ho went to pick up our campervan at Apollo.
It was a long wait, and we roam around inside and outside the airport, only to realise it was surprisingly warm.
That's when all of us decided to change into short pants and keep our jackets.

After an hour or so, we were welcomed by our drivers and transport IC with an Apollo Euro Deluxe 6 Motorhome.
For someone who drive a Daihatsu Charade, the campervan is one huge car.

With a car at hand, we 1st went along Sheridan Street to get some grocery (mainly corn flakes, milk, and instant noodles)
Then we drove to Cairns Central to have lunch (Hungry Jack's) and buy more grocery (more corn flakes, more milk and ham and cheese)
I was wondering why are there McDonald's, Subway, but no Burger King.
Apparently, when Burger King expand into Australia, the business name was already trademarked by a local company. So Burger King provided the Australian franchisee, Jack Cowin, a chance to choose another name. And guess what he choose? Hungry Jack's.

Since we missed the main activity in Cairns for the day, we decided to go free and easy.
After checking into the caravan park some 4km west of the city, we drove into the city to the Esplanade.

The Esplanade
The Esplanade, a long promenade along the sea front.
Guess it was low tide when we were there. The water were far away from the promenade.
But this doesn't affect the scenery. High tide or low tide, there's always something to be amazed at what nature has to offer.

Further upfront, right next to the Esplanade is the Lagoon
Cairns has no beaches in itself. Thus, this large public swimming pool, aka the 'Lagoon', serves as a good place for family outings. This is also where you find the iconic Ketupat Fish.

It also seems like a good place to cool off during the day.
And yes, I mean cool off.

Guys watching girls sun-bathing in bikinis. =)

We didn't intend to get wet, so we just wander around, take some photo,
and walk all the way to the Cairns Pier, waiting for sunset.

It was a very relaxing and laid back day.
一切是多么的完美… 对一个白人来说…
踏进Crazy John's购物中心,收银员看我们的眼神根本就好像是在看过街老鼠
唉… 风水轮流转
